how to launch yourself in the direction of success
7 months ago, I was not seeing the business growth I wanted.
I knew something was off and it was on me to figure out what that was.
My mind started to travel back to my days in corporate finance…
working 12-14 hours days
getting pummeled by more emails than are minutes in a day
jumping from meeting to meeting to meeting
never having a spare 2 minutes to catch my breath or
step outside to get some sun on my face…
even though I was living in Los Angeles at the time — one of the sunniest cities in the world.
This vivid memory of the past began to produce feelings of anger, sadness, frustration, and determination inside me.
An electric charge of energy building stronger in intensity… compelling me to use and direct it towards taking a series of actions in my business to ensure I do not end up back in a toxic box of a job again.
It was here, my Not-Self vision was born.
Most people aren’t where they want to be in their career because they haven’t generated a strong enough motivation to move in the opposite direction of what they don’t want.
Today, I'm going to help you do what I did a few months ago and launch yourself in the direction of what you want from your career by using a Not-Self vision to energize and motivate you to transform.
The Not-Self
The Not-Self is a term that comes from the Human Design system.
The Not-Self represents the aspects of your personality, behaviors, and actions that do not align with your core essence. Your authenticity.
The Not-Self is reflected in the habits, pressures, and influences that you unconsciously adopt from the external environment, including —
the career path you choose
the toxic workplace you stay in
the conformity to urgency culture
— even when it leads to chronic stress & burnout
You will continue with your Not-Self habits until you bring awareness to what these habits are and the future those habits will lead you towards if you continue to repeat them.
This is why learning to use a self-awareness tool like Human Design is so valuable.
Through learning and applying the insights of your design, you begin to build new habits that align with who you really are, rather than who you feel pressured to be.
You can learn more about Human Design here.
Now we’ve reached the point in the newsletter where we could get super scientific and nerd out on all the latest research about habit formation.
or… I could give you a more practical path forward that enables you to leverage the way your energy naturally operates to move in the direction of a more authentic, satisfying, abundant career.
Let’s go practical today.
1) Learn about your energy type in Human Design
In Human Design, you start by learning you are 1 of 5 energy types.
If you don’t know what your type is yet, you can look up your type here.
Generators are 36% of the population.
They have powerful, creative, sustainable life force energy that is best utilized by responding to things that genuinely excite them. Their career purpose theme is to know themselves and build their career around what excites them the most, committing to reach a level of depth & mastery.
Manifesting Generators are 30% of the population.
They also have a powerful internal source of energy that is best utilized by responding to things that excite them and allow them to move with speed and efficiency. Their career purpose theme is to know themselves and build their career around the multiple passions that excite them most.
Projectors make up 23% of the population.
They thrive when they are advising, directing, and understanding others. Their energy is best used in observing and waiting for the right invitations to share their insights. They need to be wise about their energy use, allowing for high levels of output, followed by rest and reflection.
Manifestors are 10% of the population.
They are here to initiate others and create waves of impact with relative ease. They thrive when they can work independently and trust their creative urges to start new projects or make changes. Their energy is best utilized through honoring their natural creation / rest cycle.
Reflectors are a rare 1% of the poulation.
They thrive through using their energy to observe, evaluate, and mirror the energy of the community that surrounds them. Reflectors do not have consistent energy to show up in the same way every day, so they benefit from a flexible approach to daily tasks that allows for surprise.
2) Learn about your Not-Self habits
Now that you have the basics of your type, you’re ready to learn about the Not-Self habits of your type.
Every type has its own set of Not-Self habits.
The goal is to bring your awareness to what these are now, so you can leverage them to create a Not-Self vision that, once created, you can utilize for motivation on your goals.
Not-Self Habits of Generators
- Ignoring your gut responses and initiating action from the mind
- Seeking external validation in your work over internal satisfaction
- Staying complacent in jobs, careers, or roles that drain your energy
Not-Self Habits of MG’s
- Choosing to engage in inefficient tasks that drain your energy
- Rushing through work without any connection your gut responses
- Sticking with one job / commitment, because of societal pressure
Not-Self Habits of Projectors
- Forcing progress without waiting for and creating invitations
- Giving unsolicited advice, leading to resistance and rejection
- Trying to match the pace of the world, leading to exhaustion & burnout
Not-Self Habits of Manifestors
- Seeking permission and approval for taking action
- Ignoring your impact on others, leading to conflict
- Holding back from initiating, starting projects, making big changes
Not-Self Habits of Reflectors
- Forcing yourself to maintain a consistent routine
- Over-identifying with other people’s issues, leading to health problems
- Regretting decisions because you rush them before pausing to reflect
3) Create a Not-Self vision, based on your design
Now that you have some awareness of the habits that deplete your energy and lead to an unhappy life and career, it’s time to create a Not-Self vision for your future.
The purpose of this vision is to paint a vivid picture of what your life will look like 12 months from now if you were to continue repeating these Not-Self habits.
Respond to these questions:
What's the impact to your health if you repeat these habits?
What will your mental state be like if these habits are repeated?
If you continue on current path, what do your finances look like?
What does it feel like to suppress your authenticity at work?
What more aligned career opportunities will you miss out on?
Challenge yourself to be clear and honest with yourself.
The goal of this exercise is to produce a strong charge of energy that you can wield for motivation in the next step.
4) Use your Not-Self vision to identify problems
Now you have two things —
a Not-Self vision and a cluster of problems that, if solved, will launch you in the direction of making aligned progress on your career goals.
Pick one problem today and commit to solving it.
I suggest picking the most pressing problem in your life currently.
Let’s call this your Big Problem.
By solving this Big Problem, you will free up more energy to focus on solving other problems.
This is how the law of energy conservation works.
For me, I like to focus on Big Problems that stand in the way of my business growth.
5) Create solutions through self-education
Now you’ve chosen a Big Problem that you are fired up to solve, because you see how it will lead to increased energy and other favorable benefits like launching you in the direction of your ideal career and lifestyle.
With this Big Problem in mind, make a commitment to solving it.
The Big Problem cannot be solved without your commitment.
You commit by setting a goal that will frame your perspective and provide you with clarity and direction for how to solve it.
Your Big Problem is your starting point. Point A.
Your goal is your process for moving to Point B.
Your process for moving to Point B will be unique to you.
Human Design teaches you the value of this.
A generator will have different problems than a projector.
The projector will look at different solutions than the generator.
Because of this, it’s important that you self-educate on the best solution for you.
Thanks to the internet, you have infinite access to information that will empower you with new knowledge that will provide clarity to help you reach your new goal.
6) Apply knowledge to tangible projects, like a business
It’s easy to become preoccupied with learning, learning, learning, and never actually applying what you learn to reality.
This is where most people lose momentum on their path to success.
You must learn AND apply what you learn through taking aligned action.
There is no other way.
Apply what you learn to a project where you have full autonomy to act in accordance with your design, like building a business or personal brand via social media.
Set milestones.
Document your journey.
Follow through.
And then come back to your Not-Self vision every month to identify new Big Problems.
If you can create solutions to every Big Problem standing between you and your next level of success in career for the next 12 months, you will be completely astonished by all the success you've created.
to your potential,
Kalei
